Former Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail claimed he had prepared charges against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak before he was abruptly replaced in 2015.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Abdul Gani made the claim when they met at Perdana Leadership Foundation yesterday as he wanted to find out why the latter was removed as AG in 2015.
Gani had been leading a special task force to investigate the 1MDB scandal prior to his enforced departure, which the government then purported to be due to his failing health.
“I met with him yesterday to learn what happened when he was removed and what was the result of his investigations.
“He (Gani) claims he was preparing to charge Najib but you know what happened, that morning, he was deprived from his post,” he told a press conference today.
Gani was replaced by former Federal Court judge Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali.
Asked if Abdul Gani showed any documents, Dr Mahathir said he did not ask for any to be presented and the talks were merely verbal.
