Quotes from former MCA president Ling Liong Sik:

“No, I did not receive any money from Tun M,” on whether he received any funds from the then PM.

“They are clever enough to do what they have to do,” on what the current MCA leadership should do if they had received money from 1MDB as alleged.

“I’ll think about it,” on whether he will join the Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy rally.

Former transport minister Dr Ling Liong Sik is sticking to his stand that misappropriating public funds and channelling it into a personal bank account is wrong.

“My mind has not changed and I still think it is wrong for people to channel (public) money into their personal accounts,” Dr Ling Liong Sik told a press conference at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) campus in Sungai Long.

He claimed in 2015 that Najib Razak had done this, which led to the Prime Minister suing him that same year. The suit was over Ling’s allegation that he had “taken people’s money” in relation to the RM2.6 billion donation issue.

Ling then filed a counter defamation suit on Dec 14 the same year against Najib. The High Court has yet to rule on Ling’s bid to strike out the lawsuit.

Asked if he was aware of allegations that the current MCA leadership was said to have received money from 1MDB funds, he said he had no knowledge of it.

On whether he had received funds from Dr Mahathir Mohamad during his time as MCA president, he said, “No, I did not receive any money from Tun M.”

He added that the party was capable of sourcing money and funding its own political activities.

On what he would advise the current MCA leaders to do if they had received money from 1MDB as alleged, Ling said, ” They are clever enough to do what they have to do.”

Earlier today, MIC president Dr S Subramaniam downplayed the allegations, stating that as far as MIC was concerned, the money it had received came from the Barisan Nasional.

On a separate matter, Ling said he has not ruled out taking part in the opposition-led Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy rally in September, which will wrap up a two-month roadshow across the country, to ensure the claims made in the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) civil lawsuits related to 1MDB are made known to the people.

“I’ll think about it,” Ling said.
