Umno deputy president urges calm.

Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been arrested by the MACC, and will face graft and money laundering charges tomorrow.

Zahid was arrested at 3.15pm, after making his sixth visit to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya since July.

The former deputy prime minister arrived at 3pm on Thursday (Oct 18) in a white Toyota Lexus SUV, accompanied by his lawyer, family members and associates.

Despite the possibility of arrest, Zahid was calm, smiling and waving at the waiting media corp.

The media gathered from as early as 1pm to cover his arrival.

Dressed in a colourful batik shirt, Zahid even entertained a request from the press to pose for pictures before entering the imposing building.

Outside the compound of MACC, some 40 supporters and Umno members gathered in a show of support for Zahid.

His eldest daughter, Nurulhidayah, has called for friends and family members to gather at the MACC headquarters tonight in a sign of solidarity with the Umno president.

She has also called for another gathering at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court tomorrow morning.

Earlier, Zahid’s party colleague and former boss Datuk Seri Najib Razak was also called to the MACC headquarters for questioning on matters believed related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad’s dealings with Abu Dhabi fund, International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC). He left the building at about 1.30pm.

Meanwhile, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has urged party members to remain calm.

He pledged his support to Zahid and his family during these trying times.

He said Zahid’s arrest will not weaken nor obstruct Umno from continuing its reform agenda.
