Sydney-born supermodel Miranda Kerr has handed over US$8.1 million worth of jewellery from her Los Angeles deposit box to US government agents.
- US$1.3m 11.72-carat diamond with ‘MK’ inscribed on necklace
- US$5.6m 8.88-carat pink diamond pendant, chain and necklace set
- US$1m 11-carat diamond earrings set in white gold
- US$1.98m matching jewellery set
The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that the jewellery included an 11.72-carat heart-shaped diamond pendant which was a Valentine’s Day gift to Kerr from former boyfriend Jho Low.
Kerr and Low reportedly dated for about a year in 2014.
“From the start of the inquiry, Miranda Kerr co-operated fully and pledged to turn over the gifts of jewellery to the government,” Kerr’s spokesman told the newspaper.
“Ms Kerr will continue to assist with the inquiry in any way she can.”
The jewels were identified in civil forfeiture lawsuits filed by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) pursuing assets allegedly bought with money misappropriated from Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The DoJ is seeking more than US$1.7 billion worth of assets.
The DoJ alleged that Low began lavishing Kerr with gems on Valentine’s Day 2014.
In a Jan 29, 2014, text message filed with the court, Jho Low told jeweller Lorraine Schwartz he wanted to buy a heart-shaped diamond for between US$1m and US$2m and “size matters”.
He selected a US$1.3m 11.72- carat diamond and had ‘MK’ inscribed on the back of the finished necklace, the DOJ alleged.
Low also bestowed on Kerr other jewellery, including an 8.88-carat pink diamond pendant, chain and necklace set costing US$5.6m, and a US$1m pair of 11-carat diamond earrings set in white gold.
He also allegedly arranged for Schwartz to create an extravagant matching jewellery set costing US$1.98m for Kerr.
“Thinking of super casual, simple, bracelet, necklace, earring and ring all similar style as picture white gold with simple diamonds. (not too big),” Low texted Schwartz on Jun 17, 2014.
“Low gave the matching diamond jewellery set to Kerr…during a multi-day excursion aboard his new yacht, the Equanimity, in late July and early August of 2014,” the DOJ alleged.
The DoJ had asked a court in California to freeze Kerr’s diamonds.
Kerr, 34, began dating Snapchat co-founder and billionaire Evan Spiegel in 2015 and the couple married in Los Angeles last month.
