Stop spreading fake news or be prepared to be hauled up by the authorities, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Ismail Sabri said he was told that 85 cases of fake news related to Covid-19 are currently being investigated, with six charged in court.
“So, to those who love to spread fake news, to share fake news with friends, I hope you stop because the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will take decisive action on those who are still posting fake news,” he told a press conference today.
Earlier, the MCMC had said that it was working with the police through a cyber-crime committee to address the spread of fake news, especially about Covid-19, which it said could mislead Malaysians and create panic.
The commission said in a statement today investigations into fake news are being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a year’s imprisonment or both, upon conviction.
