Instant social media fame for student who speaks close to 10 languages.

A video that went viral posted on Facebook by Rishiwant Singh Randhawa, 43, has propelled Krystal Lim into celebrity status.

Lim and Rishiwant crossed paths in Pandan Perdana, Kuala Lumpur, late last month. She said she was simply being polite and greeted Rishiwant, then a stranger but now a friend, in Punjabi.

Rishiwant, who was having tea at a restaurant, was so impressed with Lim’s mastery of the language and Punjabi accent that he recorded their conversation and posted it online.

The 22-year-old student was surprised that the video went viral.

“I didn’t expect that to happen! I just said ‘hi’ to him in Punjabi, and he followed me all the way to the mobile store.

“I was reloading my mobile credit and only realised that someone was recording a video of me when the store owner alerted me,” Lim was quoted as saying by The Star.

She only found out about her fame on social media when a friend told her he had watched the video.

“I thought he was joking, but later found out he was telling the truth,” she said.

It was reported that Lim took up Punjabi five years ago by listening to her friends speak the language. She also learnt Hindi the same way.

“I had basic conversations with my friends in their language but didn’t learn it formally.

“I developed an interest in learning languages in secondary school.

“The more we learn about other people’s culture, the more it helps widen our perspective in life.

“We can also make new friends from all around the world,” Lim said.

Besides Punjabi and Hindi, Lim speaks Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

An only child studying at an international college in Taman Maluri, she has taken up lessons in Japanese, French and Spanish.
