A construction tycoon from Shanghai is so taken up with Penang that he decided to hold his son’s wedding on the island.

According to Chen Xiao Chun, 56, he was here on tour in 2013 and found the people friendly, and the heritage and culture unique.

“After that, I applied for the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) scheme and have been spending about six months here every year,” Xiao Chun was quoted as saying by The Star.

He started planning for the wedding of his only son Chen Gong from April, with the nuptials taking place at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa in Batu Ferringhi on Thursday.

He flew in 140 guests from China for four days to witness the wedding and to see the island’s charm for themselves.

“I wanted to make the wedding a memorable one for my son and the guests,” Xiao Chun said.

“It does not matter how much I spend as it is all about having everyone together to celebrate the occasion,” he added.

The wedding date was chosen to coincide with China’s Golden Week, which is a weeklong national day holiday so that all the guests would be free to travel to Penang.

“I just want everyone to have a great time,” Xiao Chun said.

Gong, 30, who works as a wheelchair quality control manager in Canada, said he was touched by his father’s gesture.

“He put in a lot of effort to make it a beautiful and memorable day.

“I have visited Penang once and enjoyed the scenic tourist sites and tasty food,” he said.

The couple exchanged vows in the garden in the morning, while a formal tea ceremony was held in the evening, followed by a reception.
