The Election Commission’s (EC) move to bar non-official media from covering the nomination process in all nomination centres is disappointing and undemocratic, said PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.
“This is a disappointing development and shouldn’t happen.
“An early registration for media practitioners who are interested to cover each nomination centre could be done to control the number of those present at the nomination centres.
“The (EC’s) move is undemocratic and an error which goes against the spirit to reform the election,” said Fahmi in a statement.
Fahmi, who is Lembah Pantai MP, urged the EC to explain itself. He also called for them to guarantee access for the media to cover the counting process and announcement of results at polling centres on Sept 26.
Earlier, the EC, in a brief statement to the media, announced that other than official media, namely RTM, Bernama, the Information Department, and Finas, would not be allowed to enter the nomination centres in all 73 constituencies involved.
It said this is in line with the implementation of special SOP to curb the Covid-19 outbreak.
The nomination process for all 73 state seats started at 9am and ended an hour later.
Warisan, led by its president and incumbent chief minister Shafie Apdal, is seeking to defend its hold on the state government, along with allies Upko, DAP, PKR, and Amanah, who are collectively known as Warisan Plus.
They are up against the coalitions of BN and Perikatan Nasional, Parti Bersatu Sabah, and an array of other local parties.
