A police source said the incident occurred when the foreigners had just arrived by bus from Kuala Terengganu, the New Straits Times reported.

They two men were initially offered a fare of RM50 per person for the 10km ride to Setapak, which they reluctantly agreed.

However, when they arrived at their destination, the cabbie told them that they had to fork out RM950 instead!

“The two initially argued but eventually gave in as they were frightened they would be harmed. The taxi driver had a wooden stick and metal bat in his car,” said the source.

After coughing up the money, the men then lodged a report at the Salak Selatan police station.

The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) also received the same report and managed to trace and detain the driver, who is in his 30s, on Thursday.

His taxi was seized to facilitate investigations under Section 22 and Section 75 of the Land Public Transport Commission(SPAD) Act.
