Boycotts will not affect the Chinese community due to their economic strength, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the calls to boycott non-Muslim products arose from fears of the Malays that they are being threatened economically by the other races.
“The Malays are in a panic when they feel the Chinese are about to overtake them. Even the Indians too in a smaller measure.
“With this fear, they start thinking about this boycott…but the Chinese community’s economy is too strong to be affected by such boycotts,” he said after an event at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Bangi yesterday.
Previously, Malay rights groups Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah) dan Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia (PPIM) launched a campaign to only buy Muslim products to assist Malay/bumiputera traders.
However, following objections raised by the non-Malays on the teaching of Jawi in vernacular schools, the campaign took a different turn to become a movement to boycott non-bumi products and services.
