Minister for International Trade and Industry Mohamed Azmin Ali has called his former boss Anwar Ibrahim a liar and psychopath over Anwar’s announcement today that he has enough numbers to form a new federal government.

“Incorrigible liar and political psychopath,” Azmin, Anwar’s former deputy in PKR, tweeted soon after the PKR president staked his claim to the top job at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Azmin, MP for Gombak, was once a loyal aide to Anwar, going back to their days in Umno together.

Azmin was Anwar’s special officer when Anwar was education minister in the 1980s and remained a close aide up to the point when Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister by then-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1998.

The deterioration in their relationship culminated when Azmin defected from PKR in late February, along with other MPs and party members, to form what is now the Perikatan Nasional government.

Anwar earlier today said he had the support of the majority of MPs to form a new government but refused to disclose the exact number of lawmakers when pressed by journalists.

He said he would only reveal the numbers to the public after meeting Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who is currently receiving care at the National Heart Institute.

There are 222 seats in Parliament, of which 109 are with the opposition.

This is the second September that Anwar says he is in a position to form a government. The first was in 2008, when the then administration led by Abdullah Ahmad Badawi lost the traditional Barisan Nasional (BN) parliamentary two-thirds super-majority.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir has cast doubt on Anwar’s announcement, saying this wasn’t the first time the PKR president has made such a statement and urged people to wait and see “if this is another episode of making claims that cannot be substantiated”.
