Cop Hailed for Swiftly Nabbing Snatch Thief

Viral video of police officer apprehending a snatch thief who had pounced on a woman at a grocery store in Kepayan Ridge, Kota Kinabalu, on Sunday (March 4).

In the incident at about 8.10pm, the woman’s handbag slung over her shoulder was snatched by the thief.

The policeman who happened to be at the scene went after the thief and nabbed him.

The swift action of the off-duty policeman has been hailed by netizens.

The 30-year-old suspect, an addict and a father of five, was captured on CCTV snatching the bag from a woman, causing her to fall on the pavement.

The CCTV footage also recorded a man in a blue T-shirt, later identified as ASP Syahrin Ali, 40, chasing after the suspect.

The suspect, who was found to be carrying someone else’s MyKad as his own, had been remanded for 14 days, Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP M Chandra said in a statement.

“Investigations also found the suspect testing positive for drugs,” he said.

He added that the suspect would be investigated for robbery, keeping someone else’s Mykad and drug abuse.
