Police have arrested a man for removing Barisan Nasional (BN) flags in Brickfields on April 12.
The man’s act was caught on a video that was shared online.
Brickfields district police chief ACP Ruslan Khalid said the 48-year-old man was arrested at a car wash premises in Brickfields.
“The incident took place at a junction near Jalan Tun Sambanthan 4 in Brickfields.
“The man was under the influence of alcohol. The investigation so far showed that he was not hired by any party to vandalise the flags. However, we have initiated an investigation under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief,” he said yesterday.
Ruslan said that police are looking into the matter seriously and stressed the public to avoid taking matters into their own hand.
“Whoever commits mischief and causes damage to public property shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with a fine or with both,” he added.
A 15-second video of the incident, believed to have been recorded by a motorist along Jalan Tun Sambanthan 4, went viral on social media. In it, a man is shown removing BN flags by the roadside.
In a similar incident on April 8, a man was also captured on video removing Barisan flags along Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.
The video which went viral shows a man who appears agitated removing Barisan flags and throwing them to the ground.
