Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said party-hopping among members of political parties should be allowed if it was done for good reasons.
Asked if Putrajaya had plans to pass anti-hopping laws, Mahathir said a law strictly against party-hopping would not promote a healthy government as dissenters of a particular party would have no choice but to remain with the party.
“If you present yourself as a member of a party and because of that perhaps you win and then you jump, that is not being faithful to your promises and to the picture you created for yourself.
“But, on the other hand, when faced with a government that is really bad and you can’t hop and have to still stay with the government, I think that’s not going to contribute to good governance.
“I think you should be able to hop and change parties,” he said during a question-and-answer session at the LawAsia conference today.
Mahathir stressed that party hoppers must do so with good reasons and not for personal aspirations.
“Not because you see that if you’re close to the prime minister you might become a minster… If that’s the reason you’re hopping, that is bad,” he said.
