He was charged for two counts under Section 323 of the Penal Code for assaulting police constable Mohamad Nizam Jamaluddin and civilian Ashraf Ahmad, which is punishable by a jail term of up to a year, a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both upon conviction.
He was also charged with obstructing the police in the execution of their duties, which is punishable under Section 353 of the same law.
In addition, he was charged for disorderly conduct under Section 90 of the Police Act, which carries a maximum sentence of six months’ imprisonment, a fine, or a combination of the two upon conviction.
Farid pleaded not guilty and a total bail of RM12,000 was set.
Deputy public prosecutor Fazeedah Faik earlier sought for bail to be set at RM20,000, but Farid’s lawyer Athari Bahardin asked for this to be lowered as the actor needed to support two children and his elderly parents.
The bail was paid by Farid’s brother.
Magistrate Nor Ariffin set March 5 for case mention.
Farid was arrested on Jan 11 for allegedly slapping a police officer and kicking two members of the public at the Kota Damansara traffic police station.
Farid’s wife Datin Diana Danielle showed up at the Petaling Jaya magistrate’s court to show her support for her husband.
Dressed in a white floral baju kurung and accompanied by her assistant, she appeared calm and walked behind Farid.
When the two met outside the holding area before entering the courtroom, Diana was seen touching her husband’s face and hair lovingly.
Earlier, Farid was overjoyed when he spotted his wife in the crowd.
He reportedly exclaimed in delight as police took him into the court’s remand room, “I love my wife and family, and miss my children. I’m very happy that my wife’s here today. I love you, Diana!”
Speaking to reporters upon his release, Farid offered very few words.
“God has made my life story more interesting by the day,” he quipped.
Meanwhile, his family plans to seek medical help for him.
His brother Fadzil Zahari said they will first send him for a medical checkup and establish the state of his mental health.
“Right now, we have yet to decide on whether to send him for traditional or modern treatment,” his other brother, Dr Anis Anwar Zahari said.
They said they would be taking Farid back to their hometown of Jitra, Kedah, once his condition improves.
“We also hope that people will stop any speculation as the case is still under police investigation,” said Fadzil.
