A 33-year-old man has died of head injuries after he was pounded by two suspected drug pushers at a flat in Kampung Melayu, Penang.
Lim Kok Boon passed away yesterday while receiving treatment at the Penang Hospital.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said Lim was bashed up by two men, known only Uchee and Adik, with a helmet.
“The men, aged 38 and 23, had attacked Lim after he stumbled upon them packing drugs next to the rubbish disposal area of the flat at about 10pm on Friday.
“The two men had thrown the drugs into the garbage bins thinking that they had been spotted by a policeman but started to hit the victim after realising he was not a policeman,” Anuar said in a statement.
He said a witness had tried to break up the fight but the suspects had continued assaulting the victim aggressively until he collapsed.
“The witness then immediately called the police and an ambulance, while the two men fled the scene,” Anuar added.
Anuar said police had identified and launched a manhunt for the two.
Police had also found the helmet used to hit the victim.
The case was initially investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon. It has now been reclassified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries a mandatory death sentence.
