Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor visited jailed PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, while the latter was recovering from a surgery at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The former Opposition leader had undergone laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to his right shoulder on Nov 12.

“I visited Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Hospital Kuala Lumpur today. He just had an operation a few days ago. May he recover soon,” Najib said in a Twitter post.

A picture of Najib and Rosmah together with Anwar and Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was also uploaded on the prime minister’s official Twitter account.

Thanking Najib and Rosmah for their “courtesy visit”, Anwar’s son Muhamad Ihsan Anwar, in a statement on behalf of his family on Friday, said he hoped that his father is allowed to recuperate in a medical facility outside of prison and given physiotherapy until he fully recovers.

“The Prime Minister and his wife met with our father, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who is now recuperating under HKL’s care after an operation on his right shoulder joint to heal his shoulder’s injury, worsened from imprisonment and the accident last month whilst under the custody of the authorities.

“I hope the manner this humanitarian issue has been managed so far will generate further goodwill on the part of the Government of Malaysia to extend all the medical attention necessary to our father,” Ihsan said.

Anwar’s family had previously urged the government to allow human rights organisations to monitor the former deputy prime minister during and after his surgery, as well as have unfettered medical access.

Ihsan also expressed his family’s appreciation to the team of surgeons, hospital staff and prison personnel for treating and caring for Anwar.
