Ambassadors will be appointed from the ranks of officers who meet the job requirements and are capable of doing the job, says Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.
“Ambassadors must be selected from the pool of trained diplomats who can do their job well,” Saifuddin said.
He added that this would prevent many political problems that might arise if ambassador posts were filled by politicians.
It was reported that the previous administration had appointed 17,000 officers and staff based on political affiliation, even though they did not have the requisite skills or experience.
“Wisma Putra already has the proper procedures in place. Those who are interested can apply for the positions,” Saifuddin said.
With regard to the two ambassadors who had initially refused to relinquish their posts, both being political appointees, he said one had returned home while another was leaving his post and coming back to Malaysia.
