Prison Officer Jumps to His Death from Penang Bridge

A 54-year-old man was found dead on a pile of rocks underneath the Penang Bridge after jumping off the bridge.

After parking his Proton Saga at KM5.4 of the Penang Bridge, a man jumped 70 metres to his death, on Thursday night (Sept 5).

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Che Zaimani Che Awang said police found the man’s car with a handwritten note of his address at KM5.4 of the bridge heading towards the island at 12.01 on Friday (Sept 6).

The man has been identified as Hazan Hashim who was attached to the Prison Department in Sungai Petani.

“The man was a prison sergeant, and was married with four children in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

“According to interviews with prison officials, he was receiving treatment at the Sungai Petani Hospital and was given a two-day MC until Sept 4.

It is learnt that Hazan had sought medical treatment at the Sungai Petani Hospital on Tuesday for insomnia and gastric pains.

Hazan had pasted a sheet of paper with the phone numbers of his siblings on the dashboard of his car, before abandoning the vehicle.

His battered remains were discovered amidst rocks next to one of the bridge’s pier columns.

ACP Che Zaimani said the body has been sent to the Penang Hospital for post-mortem.
