Two people were killed in a head-on collision at Km53.2 of Jalan Johor Baru-Batu Pahat near the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) branch in Pontian.

The incident involving a Perodua Axia and Perodua MyVi occurred at 3:11 pm yesterday.

The driver of the MyVi, 17-year-old Goh Jia Chien, was killed on the spot due to severe head injuries.

The passenger in the Axia, Nur Fazira Yusof, 28, died four hours later at the Pontian hospital.

Pontian district police chief Superintendent Zakaria Abd Rahman said the driver of the MyVi was travelling from Pekan Nanas to Pontian.

“Initial investigations showed that the teenager was driving in a dangerous manner and overtaking recklessly along double lines,” Zakaria said in a statement.

“The Myvi driver died on the spot while the 24-year-old Axia driver and his 28-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries and were sent to the Pontian Hospital,” he said.

The female passenger succumbed to head injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
