PKR Negri Sembilan is giving priority to Dr S Streram to be nominated as the candidate for the Rantau by-election.
Its chairman, Aminuddin Harun said Dr Streram, who is also the former candidate for the seat in the 14th General Election (GE14), has long fought for the right which had been denied him in the election.
“We will send two or three nominees, but Dr Streram’s name is the state PKR’s priority. He was involved in GE preparations in Rantau from the very beginning and then had made the effort to appeal in court when he was not allowed to contest.
“All that is his own effort and commitment. It’s not okay if I do not put his name as a candidate after all that he has done,” he said after chairing the exco meeting at his official residence here today.
The Election Special Court here last Friday ruled that the unopposed victory of Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan for the Rantau seat during GE14 was null and void.
The decision was made by Judge Datuk Azimah Omar, who also decided that a by-election for the Rantau seat should be held immediately.
Dr Streram was later reported to have said it was unfair if he was not nominated to contest when he had taken all the trouble to file the petition against Mohamad’s victory.
Aminuddin, who is also the state’s Menteri Besar, said Dr Streram stood the chance to win because he had been preparing for a long time including approaching the local community, all while still pursuing his duty as Rantau state assembly coordinator
He, however, said the ultimate decision would be decided by the party leadership at the central level. – NST
