The identity of the new mentri besar is still shrouded in mystery, but it is widely speculated to be Sungai Tua assemblyman Amirudin Shari, as opposed to Ijok assembly Dr Idris Ahmad.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali clocked out of the state secretariat for the last time this evening (June 18).

Azmin, 54, who will officially relinquish the position on Tuesday, was given a heartfelt send-off by the state’s civil servants.

In his farewell speech at the state secretariat lobby, an emotional Azmin said he was leaving the Selangor government with a heavy heart.

“Even though this is difficult, but I would like to inform that I have clocked out for the last time in this building and it is time for me to bid all of you farewell,” he said.

At one point, Azmin was seen tearing up as he wiped his tears with a handkerchief.

He also said Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had consented to his suggested replacement who will be sworn in on Tuesday morning.

“I met the Sultan of Selangor today to present the name of my replacement, who also has the approval of the PKR and Pakatan Harapan leadership,” said Azmin.

Though not revealing a name, Azmin stated that he is confident of his successor’s capability to lead the state and carry out people-centric policies.

He also said the candidate would be “dynamic, energetic and will continue the legacy of Selangor”.

The Gombak MP and Bukit Antarabangsa state assemblyperson also said Selangor will always be on his radar and promised to continue looking out for the state from Putrajaya.

“I promise that even though I will be (serving) in Putrajaya, Selangor will always have a special place in my heart.

“My successor will also ensure close cooperation with the federal government,” he said.

The identity of the new mentri besar is still shrouded in mystery, but it is widely speculated to be Sungai Tua assemblyman Amirudin Shari, as opposed to Ijok assembly Dr Idris Ahmad.

Amirudin is the preferred choice of most Pakatan assemblymen, whilst PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had written to the Selangor palace naming Dr Idris as their choice of candidate.

Her recommendation was supported in writing by state leaders of Pakatan’s component parties.

Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, replaced Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as the Selangor mentri besar and was first sworn in on Sept 23, 2014.

He is currently the Economic Affairs Minister in Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad’s cabinet.

As Selangor Pakatan Harapan chief, he led the coalition to a landslide victory in the state, winning 51 out of the 56 state seats.

As Economic Affairs Minister, Azmin said he will focus on bringing in foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country.

“I hope to create a more vibrant economy, create value, jobs and ensure sustainable economic growth.

“I will also look into increasing FDIs into the country,” he said.
