A man arrested in connection with the case of a mother who sold her 14-year-old daughter into prostitution to pay her mounting debts admitted that he brought the underage girl to a hotel room but did not have sex with her.

According to Lawas district police chief Deputy Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, the man was arrested in front of a restaurant in Lawas town at 9.30pm on Oct 9.

Police have obtained an order from the magistrate’s court to remand the man for seven days.

Zainal revealed to the media today a startling claim made by the suspect.

“The suspect admitted he had brought the girl to a hotel room.

He said he did not have sex with her when he found out that she was his own niece,” Zainal said.

It is not known why the 23-year-old wireman did not recognise his own niece at first.

The 30-year-old mother of the teenager allegedly collaborated with a karaoke outlet owner to have her daughter sold for prostitution.

The victim, a school dropout, claimed she was raped three times at a Lawas hotel in April by a man who paid the karaoke outlet owner RM1,000.

The mother and 45-year-old karaoke owner, also a woman, were arrested on Oct 8.

Police said that those who had sex with the girl would also be charged with rape.

It was reported that the girl has been referred to the state welfare authorities for protection.
