The husband of singer and actress Ziana Zain was charged in the Shah Alam magistrate’s court today with voluntarily causing injuries and bruises on their 10-year-old son’s body.
Armin Zaharin Ahmad Zambri, 53, pleaded not guilty to whipping the alleged victim with a cane at a house in Denai Alam at around 4am on Feb 25.
The charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code carries a maximum 10 years’ jail or a fine or whipping, or any two of the punishments upon conviction.
Magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin set RM5,000 as bail with one surety, and April 4 for the next mention.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Megat Mahathir Megat Tharih Afendi appeared for the prosecution while the accused, a former air steward who is currently unemployed, was unrepresented.
“I did not abuse my son. I taught him how to recite (the Quran) and pray, but he did not understand and is imbecilic.
“I am responsible for four other children as well as my sick mother,” he was quoted saying by the New Straits Times.
Megat Mahathir requested bail be set at RM10,000.
The magistrate set bail at RM5,000 with one surety and set April 4 for re-mention of the case.
It is understood that Ziana lodged a police report on Feb 27 against her husband, who was arrested by police on March 3 to facilitate investigations.
The couple married in May 1998 and had four children together: Muhammad Aiman, 19, Muhammad Ammar, 14, and twins Muhammad Ariel and Siti Nur Kaseh, 9.
Ziana did not attend this morning’s proceedings.
