Facing up to 20 years’ and not 10 years’ jail.
Armin Zaharin Ahmad Zambri, the husband of well-known artiste Ziana Zain, is now facing a heavier sentence after the prosecution amended his charge of causing hurt to his son on Feb 24.
Clad in a grey shirt and jeans, he pleaded not guilty before magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin when the amended charge was read out.
Armin, who is currently unemployed, was accused of causing injuries and bruises to his son’s body with a rotan.
The incident allegedly occurred at his home in Denai Alam, between 8pm and 10.30pm, on Feb 24.
He was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code. If convicted, he carries a maximum 20 years’ imprisonment or a fine or whipping.
On March 6, Armin pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 324 of the same Act for injuring his nine-year-old son.
Previously, he faced up to 10 years’ jail or a fine or whipping, or any two of the punishments upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Megat Mahathir Megat Tharif Afendi prosecuted while Muhammad Zufar Elias represented Armin.
The magistrate maintained the RM5,000 bail with one surety and set April 5 as the date to submit documents.
Armin was later detained at the Sungai Buloh Prison as no family members or friends paid the bail, the New Straits Times reported.
It is understood that Ziana lodged a police report on Feb 27 against her husband, who was arrested by police on March 2 to facilitate investigations.
