The government will give civil servants an Aidilfitri bonus, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Updated: Grade 56 and below civil servants will each receive RM450 in festive aid ahead of Hari Raya, the Prime Minister’s Office said today. The aid will benefit nearly 1.5 million workers. About 800,000 pensioners will also receive RM225. The payout is on May 24. The government has set aside RM855 million for the purpose, said the PMO.
“There is (an Aidilfitri bonus for civil servants), we will announce later,” he told reporters when met at the Teachers’ Day 2019 celebrations, national level, in Georgetown today.
Dr Mahathir was replying to questions on whether the government would give an Aidilfitri bonus to civil servants.
Cuepacs president Azih Muda told the media that he had written to the prime minister and finance minister, and spoken to the chief secretary to the government on the matter.
He proposed that every civil servant be given a bonus of RM1,000, while retirees from Grade 54 and below be given RM500 each.
Last year, the government gave an RM400 bonus to civil servants in Grade 41 and below and RM200 to government pensioners.
Meanwhile, several state governments, including Penang, Kedah and Melaka, have declared a half-month bonus or a minimum of RM1,000 each for public workers in state agencies.
The first day of Aidilfitri is expected to be on June 5 this year.
