Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has rubbished speculation that he is going to resign from the Cabinet.

He raised this at a media briefing on the sales and services tax (SST) at Putrajaya today when asked if it is it true that Tabung Harapan will cease operation on Sept 30.

“There was a rumour that I would resign, so it is a similar (situation). So, let’s wait…the durian is delicious after it falls,” he added.

Lim said such talk has been circulating over the past one month and he has no idea about the motive behind the rumour.

Asked if he was going to resign from the Cabinet, he said curtly, “Of course no, lah.”

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad received a backlash when he appointed a Chinese to helm the Finance Ministry.

Lim is the first Chinese finance minister in 44 years.

He was reported to have responded to such criticism by saying, “I don’t consider myself Chinese. I am a Malaysian.”

Previously, MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong had said Lim’s role was reduced to a mere bookkeeper.

He said this because agencies previously under the Finance Ministry have been transferred to Azmin Ali’s Economic Affairs Ministry, which has more power. – Malaysiakini
