Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected to be two days’ away but the ‘balik kampung’ exodus has started.

Early this morning, traffic slowed to a crawl on most major expressways heading out of Kuala Lumpur, The Star reported.

According to updates by Star Media Radio Group’s (SMRG) traffic team (@mytraffic) and PLUS Highway, traffic was heavily backed up at several stretches heading north at 10.30 am.

An earlier accident caused a 6 km traffic back-up on the stretch from Lembah Beringin to Tanjung Malim.

A PLUS official said that traffic was almost at a standstill for at least 10 km between Tapah and Gua Tempurung, where the road stretches uphill.

Traffic is also backed up for more than 3 km from Slim River to Sungkai, and for a 4 km span between Jelapang and the Menora Tunnel.

The congestion continued after the Menora Tunnel all the way to Sungai Perak.

Another accident between Changkat Jering and Taiping also caused traffic to be slow-moving for about 6 km as the crash site was being cleared.

Traffic remained smooth, however, on the Penang Bridge on both sides.

On the Karak Highway heading east, traffic was at a 15 km crawl after Gombak all the way to Genting Sempah, and from the Genting Sempah rest area to Bukit Linggi and Lentang.

On the Johor causeway, all lanes leading to Singapore were busy.

Safe journey, folks!
