In an unprecedented move, the Perak government will remove Zamri Man as Ipoh mayor for going absent without leave.

Ipoh mayor Zamri Man, who was appointed in 2015, may be sacked after going absent without leave.

Perak exco Paul Yong, who is in charge of the local government portfolio, said he was informed that Zamri was unwell.

However, he said the mayor did not submit any sick leave until two months after going missing.

“The situation with the mayor – it’s a first. It’s like he has disappeared.

“He didn’t give any letter to the local government authorities or even to me saying that he’s sick,” he was quoted as saying by The Star Online.

Yong said he had tried to meet Zamri, but to no avail.

He said he had also gone to Zamri’s home to look for him but could not find him.

“I only learned about him being unwell from the local council secretary and from the Ipoh City Council, but no information about his condition and whereabouts.

“I still cannot get him. I really don’t know what is wrong with him,” he was quoted as saying.

Yong said a mayor or local council president is entitled up to 90 days of sick leave, but Zamri had used up all of them.

According to the report, the mayor last appeared in public at a cycling event in August last year.
