Putting the tragedy to rest.
There is no need for a truth and reconciliation commission to look into the May 13, 1969, race riots, de facto Law Minister Liew Vui Keong has said in response to DAP Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng’s question on whether the government was ready to declassify documents on the incident and form a commission to examine events surrounding the incident.
In a parliamentary written reply, Liew said a report on the May 13 tragedy had been prepared by the National Operations Council in the months after the event and could easily be accessed.
“The report has the full details and facts on the incident.
“Hence there is no need for a truth and reconciliation commission to be formed on the May 13, 1969, incident,” he said.
Liew added that the government’s current focus was on strengthening national unity and growing the economy. – TMI
