Is There More to Latheefa’s Appointment?

Why did Dr M not consult the Cabinet and remain so quiet about the appointment?

The rumour mill has been spinning non-stop since the appointment of the new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) chief.

Everyone seems to have an opinion as to why the premier picked Latheefa Koya as head of the MACC and suddenly dropped Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull.

All Cabinet ministers, and even Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, were caught off-guard over the appointment, and Anwar had since said that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should explain his move to the rakyat.

According to sources, there is plenty of discontentment within Pakatan Harapan over Latheefa’s sudden appointment.

“If Dr Mahathir was indeed unhappy with Shukir’s performance, then he should have at least discussed it with the Cabinet,” said a PKR leader.

He claims there were rumours that Dr Mahathir was unhappy with Shukri over how he was allegedly reluctant to go after certain Umno, MCA, MIC and PAS leaders.

“There were also allegations that Shukri was merely going after the small fish while the big fish were still free.

“There were also questions raised why MACC is yet to initiate investigations into the on-goings in Sarawak and Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud,” said another PH insider.

A senior DAP leader, meanwhile, claimed that while Latheefa may indeed be a suitable candidate to lead MACC, there was plenty of concern over the kind of co-operation she would get from within the agency.

This leader claimed a large majority of those within the MACC were not “too pleased” with her appointment.

“This may create plenty of problems. For one, investigations may not be properly carried out, there may be undue delays and a host of other problems.

“Also, there is this huge rumour about Latheefa’s appointment being part of a much bigger sinister plan which involves Anwar and Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.

“Whatever it is, we feel Dr Mahathir should come out and shed some light into this. The entire fiasco is not going down well with many and is doing more harm than good to the PH leadership,” he added.
