I just want to know what others feel about the controversy surrounding Indian preacher, Dr Zakir Naik.
Our prime minister has said that Malaysia has a right not to extradite Zakir if he is not going to be accorded fair justice.
He likened this with Australia not extraditing Sirul Azhar Umar, the former bodyguard who was sentenced to death in 2015 for the murder of Mongolian model, Altantuya Shaariibuu, to Malaysia.
It was earlier reported that India’s Enforcement Directorate would seek Interpol’s cooperation to detain the controversial preacher with an eye on extraditing him from Malaysia to face money-laundering charges in India.
To me personally, the issue of Sirul and Zakir are totally different and are not an equal comparison.
Sirul does not in any way pose a threat to the security of Australia, while I believe there are a number of Malaysians who feel Zakir does pose a threat to our national security and national unity.
I have nothing personal against Zakir but simply cannot understand why our government remains adamant in wanting to offer him protection.
From what I understand, India is a major trade partner with Malaysia and as we all know is among the emerging superpowers in the world, alongside China.
Why would we want to be at loggerheads with this nation when there are so many more important things to attend to?
For me personally, this episode seems totally uncalled for and if there is a majority of Malaysians who feel Zakir should not be here, then the government should listen to its people.
There is no rationale for offering this man any protection considering what Malaysians feel about him.
I really hope the government reconsiders its decision and does what the rakyat want and not otherwise.
