Police reveal details of financial woes while the children’s grandmother recounts hearing the three young victims scream.

  • House rental and children’s school fees in several months’ arrears
  • Car repossessed as in default of monthly payments
  • Grandmother heard children screaming but their father said they were having a nightmare

Kedah CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said financial woes could be among the reasons behind the tragic deaths of three children and their father in Sungai Petani, The Star reported.

K Sivarau was apparently saddled with debts, with the house rental and children’s school fees not having been paid for several months.

Earlier, his 20-year-old son from a previous marriage had said that the three children had been absent from school for the past week.

The mother of the three siblings hanged herself in the same bedroom where the four bodies were found three weeks ago.

Police revealed that a car was also repossessed as its monthly instalments were not paid.

“K Sivarau’s debts could be quite high,” Kuala Muda district police chief OCPD Asst Comm Saifi Abdul Hamid was quoted as saying.

“It is believed to be among the main contributing factors, he said, declining to reveal more yesterday.

As part of their investigation, police called in family members of Sivarau, including his mother-in-law S Punita, as well as the kindergarten teacher of his two children to have their statements recorded.

Punita and the teacher were interviewed for about two hours and 40 minutes respectively.

On Monday, Punita, 60 told police that she last spoke to the four during dinner on Sunday before they went upstairs to bed.

It was reported that she woke up suddenly when she heard her grandchildren screaming.

According to the elderly lady, Sivarau came down and told her that the children were having a nightmare.

She woke up at 8am and went about her household chores until 1.30pm when she discovered their bodies upstairs.

Yesterday, the remains of the four were buried at the Hindu cemetery near the Sri Subramaniam Kuil in Jalan Badlishah, after the funeral rites were conducted.
