Two days after being told by the EC to remove the pictures of Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Lim Guan Eng from a billboard in Seputeh, DAP has complied – by removing just their faces.

Incumbent Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has found a new way to cover up the images of Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng on the billboards in her constituency.

“I received calls from Election Commission to ask me to take down billboards with the photo of Tun Mahathir and Lim Guan Eng.

“My candidate agent Edmund Teoh negotiated with EC officers and we are allowed to cover their photos ourselves on the billboard.

“Today we carried out the ceremony of covering up their faces but we put the short form of their names on it,” she said.

Yesterday, the Election Commission (EC) reiterated that only pictures of candidates and two political party leaders, namely the president and deputy president (or their equivalent), from Barisan Nasional (BN), PKR and PAS can be used on campaign materials for GE14.

EC chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said at the state level, only a combination of the pictures of the party’s president, deputy president, the party liaison chairman (or their equivalent), Menteri Besar/Chief Minister and candidates (based on the use of logo/symbol of political party registered by candidate during the nomination day) was permitted to be used on campaign materials.

“So, why do people question that the pictures of certain leaders have been cut out when they (the opposition) have agreed to use the PKR symbol in GE14?

“Pakatan Harapan (PH) has agreed to use the PKR logo in the GE14. As such, only the images of PKR president and deputy president can be displayed, and not Mahathir’s (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) as he is the chairman of PH,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama yesterday.

“The EC has also instructed that BN posters nationwide, bearing the picture of the President of China be taken down by 445 personnel on duty comprising political parties, the Royal Malaysia Police, local authorities and EC officers. However, it was neither highlighted nor become viral.

“The same rules apply for all political parties,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pakan Nanas state seat candidate Yeo Tung Siong said several EC staff from Pontian covered Mahathir’s face with a plastic sheet yesterday morning.

Yeo, the Johor DAP assistant secretary, said his office received a phone call from the Pontian EC department that it wanted to cover Mahathir’s photo on a billboard that had the images of the former premier and PKR President Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
