A Nigerian man suspected of flinging his step-grandson from a third-floor apartment unit in Setapak, resulting in his death, is allegedly suffering from mental issues.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said based on tests conducted on the suspect’s urine, police found him to be on medication.
“No record on the treatment so far, but the suspect’s family and friends confirmed this.
“However, police will conduct further investigations into the claims,” he told a press conference today.
Saiful Azly said the 42-year-old suspect was remanded for seven days starting today to facilitate the on-going investigation.
He said police are also investigating allegations of the suspect’s involvement with “deviant teaching”.
Saiful Azly said the case is being investigated under Section 302 for murder, Section 307 for attempted murder, and Section 377c for committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature without consent of the Penal Code.
“We also cannot take the suspect’s statement because he is still being treated at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL),” he said.
He also said the suspect’s wife, the 24-year-old stepdaughter he had attempted to rape and another child, are currently receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital for trauma and injuries as a result of being beaten by the suspect.
“A post-mortem on the 4-year-old boy is ongoing,” he said.
Yesterday, the suspect was arrested for tossing his step-grandson, who was known to neighbours as Adam, out of a window from the third floor of an apartment in Danau Kota, Setapak.
The boy was the child of the suspect’s stepdaughter.
The incident occurred after the suspect allegedly attempted to rape his stepdaughter, who was sleeping in the living room but was stopped by his wife and other stepchildren.
According to the police, the suspect’s three other stepdaughters between 19 and 29 years old tried to stop him and screamed for help from neighbours. He then became furious and went on a rampage, hitting and stomping on his wife and four stepchildren in the house.
Then he lifted Adam and headed to the window of the main room and subsequently threw the child out.
The suspect also jumped out through the same window and was injured.
He was then detained by security guards and members of the public who later handed him over to the police.
Witnesses to the tragic incident claimed to have heard loud noises and quarrels coming from the unit before it happened.
Idayu Ismail, 24, said after hearing the loud noises at about 8am, she opened her front door slightly and saw two women believed to be family members of the suspect at the staircase in front of her apartment unit pleading for help.
“I heard them asking for help and looking at the state of the suspect’s wife who was unclothed and covered in blood, I immediately contacted the police,” she told reporters.
Another witness, Maimun Ismail, 41, said he and his sister helped cover up the body of an undressed woman believed to be the suspect’s 49-year-old wife, and was told the suspect was still with his step-grandson in the house.
Idayu claimed that soon after that, she heard sounds of something thumping onto the ground, as her apartment unit was located on the ground floor.
“The suspect was found to have thrown his mobile phone down, and then flung his step-grandson through the window of the apartment unit on the third floor before the suspect himself jumped down from the same window,” she said.
The suspect sustained injuries from the fall and was subsequently held by the residents and security guards at the apartment building before being handed over to the police who arrived at the scene at the time.
The suspect was said to have beaten the child until he was in a weakened state before throwing him out of the apartment window.
