A meeting between Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Barisan Nasional MPs to discuss Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s status as a lawmaker, following his guilty verdict in the SRC International Sdn Bhd trial took place in Parliament on Wednesday (July 29).

According to multiple sources, the 30-minute meeting was to discuss Najib’s conviction and to keep its MPs updated over the situation.

“Once they find out Najib can attend Parliament and won’t lose his seat, they are okay,” said the source.

Meanwhile, another source described the meet-up with Barisan lawmakers as an “emergency meeting with the PM”.

Muhyiddin is currently meeting other Bersatu MPs and former PKR lawmakers aligned with Datuk Seri Azmin Ali to deliberate Najib’s court verdict.

Talk of dissolving the Parliament to pave way for an unprecedented snap polls has been rife because if Najib loses his Parliamentary seat, it leaves Perikatan Nasional with a razor-thin majority of 112 in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat.

Najib’s conviction has also caused unease among certain Umno leaders and grassroots leaders, where calls to boycott Perikatan have been rife.

Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also tweeted a thinly-veiled message, speaking vaguely that the main principles should be about honesty and sincerity.

“Sincerity and honesty are the main principles of partnership. But when principles and honesty are set aside, any form of partnership must be re-evaluated.” – The Star
