Former minister Zaid Ibrahim has lamented the increasing racial narrative in the issue involving socks with the word Allah.
Taking to X, Zaid said no one should use God to break the law, incite hatred, and destroy businesses.
“There must be limits to your anger. First, you asked the Chinese trader to apologise, and they did.
“Then, you revoked the factory license, and they are now out of business. Then you said the boycott would continue,” Zaid wrote, referring to Umno’s vocal stance on the matter.
The party’s youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has been at the forefront of calling a boycott of KK Mart, where the controversial socks were found, and the Umno supreme council has backed his action.
“At what point will you be satisfied?” Zaid asked, urging the prime minister to step in.
“They (the government) have to pass the test of reasonableness. Suppose they can’t? Let the others who can, rule.”
Zaid cautioned that Umno’s “racist and bigotry” should not be allowed to rear its ugly head in the guise of defending religion or God.
“It seems these voices of madness once again cow the Malay leadership. Fortunately, we have a sprinkling of Malays who give me hope that we Malays are not all mad.
“But these small voices are not going to save the country. We were told that Anwar Ibrahim would forever change the political landscape and keep the country on the right path. I hope so. In this case, at the right time, he needs to tell Umno there is a redline that they must not cross.
“I leave it to the PM to decide when to announce and define what constitutes the redline. But he must stand up to the rampaging Umno. Otherwise, what value is Madani to the people of this country?” said Zaid. – Malaysiakini
