DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has questioned why the prime minister has kept silent over Abdul Hadi Awang’s claims that non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras were at the root of corruption.

Lim said he was not surprised by Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) silence on the PAS president’s remarks, but said Ismail Sabri Yaakob could not afford to keep silent on the issue.

“It’s not right. (Ismail) should be the prime minister for all races, not just for Muslims and Bumiputeras. In fact, the majority of people in Sabah and Sarawak are non-Muslims. What do they feel about Hadi’s baseless statement?

“The prime minister cannot continue to stay silent. Doing so will be detrimental to the unity of the people and the nation, especially between the Peninsular and East Malaysia,” he told FMT.

The Bagan MP said the party had lodged a report against Hadi at the Dang Wangi district police station, urging for the Marang MP to be probed under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.

They also want Hadi to be probed under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code for making statements conducive to public mischief with intent to incite the community into committing an offence against other communities.

Meanwhile, Lim accused PN’s leaders of allowing Hadi to touch on racial sentiments in order to maintain PAS’ support for the coalition.

“For them, the truth and facts are not as important compared to how they can garner greater support. This is something that’s unprincipled, dishonest and dishonourable.”

The Muhyiddin Yassin-led PN coalition comprises Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, and two Sabah parties, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and Parti Progresif Sabah (SAPP).

On Aug 20, Hadi said corruption stemmed from those who reaped profit through illegal means, adding that the majority of those involved in ruining the country’s politics and economy were non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras.

He said it had reached a point that “these people” ended up controlling the country’s economy and using their money to taint politics, the administration and judiciary. – FMT
