A 51-year-old woman is the latest victim of a scam using fake Public Bank short messaging service (SMS) messages.

Selangor Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief ACP Muhammad Yazid Muhammad Yew said the victim had lodged a report on March 24 at the Petaling Jaya Police station when she found money missing from her savings account after receiving the SMS and clicking on the link given.

“The victim, who is working in the private sector, received an SMS from Public Bank saying that her account was at high risk of being exposed to third parties.

“She then clicked on the https://pbebankonline.com link and followed the instruction to key in her personal data, online banking information and password,” he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code and so far, there have been two similar cases reported in Selangor involving losses of RM33,500.

“People are advised not to click on the bank link which is believed to be the new modus operandi used by scammers,” he said.
