A letter allegedly written by the Umno secretary-general stating that the allocations for its party divisions and wings would be halted beginning May is circulating on social media.
In the letter dated May 22, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the Umno headquarters had looked into its financial standing and members were informed that the monthly allocation of funds would be stopped.
“However, it is hoped that the divisions and wings would continue with its operations as usual. Your cooperation on this matter is much appreciated,” said the letter, which bears the party logo.
Umno divisions would be having their meetings until June 10.
Umno supreme council member and Sri Gading division chief Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi told the Malay Mail he received the circular, asserting that Umno’s finances were now restricted after police seized RM114 million from two condominiums occupied by former president Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s children.
Umno later claimed the money along with another RM500,000 seized from Najib’s mansion to be party funds held by him while he had still been president.
“Since we are now the Opposition and when the president resigned, all this while the fund had come from him. Now the money is with the police so the funds are limited,” Ab Aziz was quoted as saying.
