Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah alleges that her car was the target of an attack while she was driving along the Federal Highway at about 5.20pm today.
Threats Maria has received include:
- Doctored images of herself and her sons beheaded ISIS-style
- A bullet and written death threats
- Red paint splashed on her son’s car
A brief Facebook post on Bersih 2.0’s official page shows two photographs of the damaged front right window of Maria’s car.
According to media reports, she was leaving her office and taking a turn from Jalan Barat onto the Federal Highway when something hit her car window on the driver’s side and cracked the glass.
The incident happened so fast and the experience was so sudden that she could not actually recall details of the assailant, including if he or she was on a motorcycle.
Later in the evening, Maria, accompanied by Bersih 2.0 committee member Mandeep Singh, lodged a report at the Kelana Jaya police station.

Last October, she received on her mobile phone death threats against her, her three sons, Mandeep Singh and former Co-Chair of Bersih Ambiga Sreenevasan.
In November, she received via WhatsApp doctored images of herself, her sons, Mandeep and Ambiga being beheaded ISIS-style.
In other incidents, she received a bullet and her son’s car was splashed with red paint.
During the press conference outside the police station this evening, it was learned that police reports have been lodged over the threats but Maria has not received any updates on the investigations of the cases.
She also revealed that there are currently 119 police investigations against Bersih.
Calling the attack on her today “an act of cowardice”, Maria added, “I do not know why fighting for clean and fair elections results in such harassment.”
