State Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) chief E Sundra Rajan said all the suspects, aged between 25 and 35, were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of carrying out loan scam activities.

“Preliminary investigations found that they have been carrying out their activities since February by targeting victims from China through social media.

“All the suspects were involved in sourcing for victims and were paid monthly salaries of between RM3,000 and RM4,000, although they have yet to be paid thus far,” he said in a statement today.

Op Pelican was launched by the police to hunt down Nicky Liow and other members of his gang for various offences, including cheating and money laundering.

Sundra said the CCID, who conducted the raids, also seized 14 mobile phones of various brands, six passports and a computer monitor unit, a keyboard and RM31,850 in cash.

“All nine have been remanded for four days from yesterday and the case is being investigated under Section 420/511 of the Penal Code for attempted fraud,” he said.
