Authorities urged to investigate without fear or favour.
The statutory declaration (SD) by convicted killer Azilah Hadri implicating Najib Razak in the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu must be investigated and all those involved in the crime prosecuted, said Ramkarpal Singh.
The lawyer, who represents Altantuya’s family in their civil suit, said if the allegation proves true, action must be taken against the others involved even though the court has convicted Azilah and fellow commando Sirul Azhar Umar of the Mongolian model’s murder.
“In the said SD, Azilah claims to have been ordered by Najib, with the knowledge of Abdul Razak Baginda and senior police officer Musa Safri, to kill Altantuya and dispose of her remains.
“There is no limitation period in criminal cases and one can be prosecuted for an offence despite a long lapse of time, provided there is evidence to support such a prosecution,” he said in a statement.
Ramkarpal said Altantuya’s family will apply to the top court to hold a watching brief in Azilah’s application.
“The revelations by Azilah in his said SD are indeed shocking and Altantuya’s family will apply to the Federal Court to hold a watching brief in the said Federal Court review application.
“The family have, for years, demanded a thorough investigation into the question of who ordered the murder in 2006, particularly when both Azilah and Sirul had no possible motive for doing so.
“We will also take the necessary steps to amend the civil suit by Altantuya’s family, which is ongoing at the Shah Alam High Court, to include the allegations contained in the said SD and the findings of the police investigation as a result.”
Altantuya’s family has been locked in a protracted civil suit against Azilah and Sirul Azhar as well as the government over her death.
Ramkarpal added that there is no need to wait for a police report on the matter as cops can act on the SD.
“A fresh statement must be taken from Azilah himself and those he implicated in his SD, including Najib. I urge Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador to do so forthwith, in light of the seriousness of the said allegations.
“The mystery of who ordered Altantuya’s murder is one that must be eventually resolved, and today’s development may be an important step in that direction.”
Ramkarpal said Altantuya’s family will not rest until the motive and personalities behind her brutal murder are revealed and those responsible brought to justice.
