The Election Commission today denied that the 14th general election will be held on Oct 13.
A video, widely circulated on social media yesterday, shows Election Commission (EC) officers at a pre-election briefing.
In the 40-second video, a man at a rostrum is heard saying: “I hereby announce that early voting will be held on October 11, 2017, and voting day on October 13, 2017.”
The video, however, was a simulation exercise ahead of GE14 and not the real McCoy.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the EC was disappointed with irresponsible individuals who recorded and leaked the video footage of the training session, creating confusion among the public about the dates for GE14.
He explained that the dates mentioned in the video were merely used for simulation and training purposes.
The video recorded was a briefing for EC officers held in Kota Baru on Jul 31.
“As such, the EC hopes that no one will be taken in by allegations saying that the dates for GE14 have already been fixed,” Hashim said.
According to the EC, it will monitor and investigate any form of false news being uploaded on social media to ensure the commission’s reputation is not adversely affected.
It might also lodge a police report against the people spreading the video on social media.
The 14th general election must be called by August next year.
