Bersih 2.0 chairman considering running in GE14 to take civil society agenda for justice, freedom, good governance, free and fair elections and human rights straight to Parliament.

  • Maria and Ambiga rumoured to contest under PKR banner
  • Maria might run in Batu (now held by PKR’s Tian Chua) or PJ Selatan (Hee Loy Sian)
  • Ambiga might take on MIC president S Subramaniam in Segamat

Prominent civil rights activist Maria Chin Abdullah confirmed yesterday that she has been approached to consider running in the 14th general elections (GE14), however, she has yet to make a decision.

“I refer to the press report that carried a story that I will be a candidate in GE14. I have in fact been approached to consider running so as to be a voice for civil society in Parliament,” Maria said in a statement.

The chairman of polls watchdog Bersih 2.0 said one of the clear aims of her candidacy is to take the civil society agenda for justice, freedom, good governance, free and fair elections and human rights straight to Parliament.

The other aim is to support the ongoing struggle in the issues by partnering with civil society organisations working on the ground.

“Once a decision is made one way or another, I will inform the public,” she added.

Several reports had speculated that Maria might contest under the PKR banner and run either in Batu or Petaling Jaya Selatan held by PKR’s Tian Chua and Hee Loy Sian respectively.

Former Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, who Maria succeeded in 2013, is also rumoured to be a candidate in the coming GE, possibly contesting against MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam in Segamat.
