Umno is prepared to face three-cornered fights if PAS chooses to work with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the coming general election, said Umno Secretary-General Ahmad Maslan.
“We don’t have any deadline for PAS to make their decision,” he told the press at the Umno annual general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre today.
Ahmad said Umno had discussed the possibility of three-cornered fights taking place among state leaders as well.
“I have informed friends that our state leadership needs to stay close to PAS. Make it easy for the PAS leadership to continue with us,” he said.
Earlier today, Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was not too late for PAS to turn back after joining the PN coalition.
Meanwhile, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said today that Umno will fight PAS too in the 15th general election (GE15) if it is with PN.
The veteran Umno politician also known as Ku Li said his party will battle all political parties that are not on its side in the GE15 and that includes current ally PAS.
“We have already made the decision to not be with PN. Therefore, we will fight PN and if PAS is still with PN, we will fight them, what else can we do?
“But if they are with us through Muafakat Nasional, then they have to separate themselves from PN,” he told reporters.
Tengku Razaleigh was asked if he thought PAS would feel slighted after Zahid said Umno will contest the GE15 under its own BN banner even while holding out a branch to the Islamist party.
PAS has steadfastly refused to commit to either its position as a component party of PN or its MN alliance with Umno and BN, which is the older charter of the two.
PAS leaders have so far insisted that the party hopes to play the middleman and reconcile Umno and Bersatu.
