Astro Audio has issued an apology and removed three radio announcers from the air following backlash over a controversial video shared on ERA’s social media platforms.

The video featured announcer Azad Jasmin dancing to a “vel vel” chant by several other staff members before bursting into laughter. The chant, which invokes Lord Muruga, is a significant part of Thaipusam rituals, often recited when carrying the kavadi. The video, reportedly filmed inside the radio station’s studio, has since been removed.

In a statement on Tuesday (March 4), Astro Audio expressed deep regret over the incident involving Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin, and Radin Amir Affendy Ahmad Aruani.

“We sincerely apologise for causing hurt and disappointment. The announcers have acknowledged their mistake and issued a public apology.

“As a responsible broadcaster, we take this matter seriously and, after careful consideration, have decided to remove the three individuals from the air until further notice.”

Astro also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive media environment and stated that it would strengthen content review processes to align with audience expectations.

The broadcaster is cooperating fully with authorities and regulators to ensure compliance with all guidelines and requirements.

The incident has drawn strong reactions from government officials.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to conduct a thorough investigation, including summoning Astro and ERA FM’s management for an explanation.

National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang urged the MCMC to take necessary action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which governs the improper use of network facilities.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo called for a comprehensive internal probe by Astro, emphasising that action must be taken against those involved.

“The actions in the video are highly offensive and deeply concerning, as they do not reflect the values of mutual respect and understanding that are fundamental to our multicultural society.

“The Thaipusam kavadi ritual holds profound significance to the Hindu community, and any form of mockery or disrespect towards it or any religious practice is unacceptable.”

The situation remains under investigation.
