The Bersatu supreme council has rejected Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation as chairman, said Rafiq Naiza Mohidden.

The supreme council member said the party wants Dr Mahathir to continue leading the country and take Bersatu to a higher level.

“The supreme council has rejected his resignation. We want him to continue leading the party,” he told reporters after a meeting at the party headquarters in Petaling Jaya last night.

He said Bersatu’s MPs will indicate their support for Dr Mahathir to continue as prime minister when they meet the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“We will appeal tomorrow morning. We want Dr Mahathir to be appointed as the eighth Prime Minister,” he said.

Asked if the party was informed of the reasons for Dr Mahathir’s decision to step down as chairman, Rafiq said: “That is very personal. We cannot disclose.”

Bersatu has 26 parliamentarians, including Dr Mahathir.

Bersatu leaders were at Mahathir’s residence in Seri Kembangan this morning.

Party president Muhyiddin Yassin arrived at 8.05am, followed by deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir at 8.10am.

Women’s wing chief Rina Harun also came, arriving through another gate to the compound.

It is not known whether they actually had a meeting with Dr Mahathir, as he was seen leaving the residence at 9.15am.
