Barisan Nasional (BN) is boycotting the Port Dickson by-election, says coalition chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said Barisan felt that the manner in which the seat was vacated was against the principles of democracy.

“The by-election is to fulfil the agenda of an individual.

“The seat became empty, not due to natural causes such as the death of the elected representative.”

Port Dickson MP Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah vacated the seat on Sept 12 to pave the way for PKR president-elect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to return to Parliament.

Danyal won the seat in the last general election with a majority of 17,710 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk VS Mogan and Mahfuz Roslan, from PAS.

The Election Commission (EC) has fixed Oct 13 for the Port Dickson by-election, with nomination to be held on Sept 29.

BN also feels that the by-election is a waste of money, said Zahid.

“We acknowledge that the present ruling government is facing financial constraints.

“The EC had stated that RM3.6 million is allocated for the by-election. I hope to see the allocation be used for a good cause for the people rather than being spent on a by-election” said the Umno president at a press conference at the party headquarters today.

Ahmad Zahid said the decision was made after BN met and found that the allocated amount by the EC to be a waste.
