A cabbie collapsed in court upon hearing the verdict for molesting his stepdaughter while she was sleeping.
At the Special Court for Child Sexual Crimes yesterday, a 59-year-old taxi driver was charged with molesting his 16-year-old stepdaughter under Section 377CA of the Penal Code which carries the penalty of a maximum 30 years in jail and whipping.
He pleaded guilty to the offence, which was committed at their house in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, at about 3am around June last year.
Judge Yong Zarida Sazali sentenced the accused to seven years in jail and ordered that he receive one stroke of the rotan. The sentence was to run from the date of his arrest on Aug 21.
Deputy public prosecutor Aimi Syazwani Sarmin had urged for a deterrent sentence, saying that the incident took place at their house which was supposed to be the shelter and a safe place for the victim.
Stunned by the verdict, the man, who was unrepresented, slid to the floor and subsequently broke down.
In pleading for leniency, he said he regretted what he had done and vowed not to repeat the offence.
“I want to take care of my wife and children. I am the sole breadwinner of my family and am also suffering from high blood pressure and asthma since I was involved in an accident,” he said in between tears.
He had to be carried out of the courtroom by police.
